Direct current motors

Winkelmann produces direct current motors which run on direct current voltage from batteries or rectified alternating current respectively rotating current.
The main electrical elements of our motors are the stator, in which the exciter winding is included and the rotor. Electric power is supplied to the stator und rotor (through carbon brushes and the collector) to produce a torque. The above mentioned winding parts are distinguished by the different circuitry options and are named by the kind of circuitry.

Shunt motor:

Exciter winding and rotor winding are connected in parallel. The advantage of a shunt motor is based on the linear relationship between the applied rotor voltage and the rotation speed of the rotor. This is the reason why shunt motors are used in drives with variable revolutions. The assembling of a closed loop with a shunt motor and an appropriate control unit is highly dynamic and not trouble prone.
   
Typical applications of the direct current shunt motor are as follows:
  Rack feeders (RGB), injection moulding machines, machine tools, coating systems used in the printing industry, emergency drive systems in power plants.
   

Series wound motor:

Exciter winding and rotor winding are connected in series. The series wound motor is qualified by the highest starting torque of all electric motors. This type of motor is used for the fast acceleration of big masses. If the series wound motor is not loaded, the rotation speed can rise up to inadmissible high values and can destroy the motor mechanically.

It is therefore important, that the motor will not be unloaded or that a rotation speed control is limiting the rotation speed.
   
Typical applications of the direct current series wound motor are as follows:
  Starter of combustion engines, propulsion engines in floor conveyors.
   
A combination of these two circuitries is called:
   

Compound motor:

One part of the exciter winding is connected in series to the rotor winding and another part is connected in parallel to the rotor winding.  The compound motor combines the advantages of the series wound motor with those of the shunt motor. Due to the series wound part, this type of motor has a high starting torque and a more stable rated speed compared to the shunt motor. The bigger the series wound part of the exciter winding is, the higher the starting torque will be. A bigger shunt part stabilizes the rotation speed. The shunt part influences also the level of the starting current.
   
Typical applications of the compound motor are as follows:
 

Emergency drive systems in power plants with special start conditions, applications where the starting moment of  shunt motors are not sufficient.
